Aputure REINVENTS the Light Bulb! (NAB 2019 Highlights)

I just came back from NAB last week and I wanted to share with you a quick rundown of the highlights for us at NAB.

Aputure RGB Battery Powered Light Bulbs

The first thing that really captured my attention was the Aputure RGB Light Bulbs. It’s not just any LED RGB light bulb, but it’s battery powered! It will also charge as you plug it into the lamp. It’s a super versatile little practical light that can be used on set and it’s going to be releasing soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

Aputure 300dII

They are also releasing the 300dII! The new upgrades from the Aputure 300d are that they took the two pieces of the power supply and ballast and put them together. This light is also going to be about 20% brighter than the original one. It also has a wireless functionality with an app to run all your lights. What is really neat about this functionality is that it creates a wireless network that the lights can use to talk to each other, but when you disconnect from it the lights still stay on. You can adjust each of the lights independently and simultaneously through this wifi network.

Aputure AL-MC

Lastly from Aputure, they are going to be releasing RGB Light Panels this year! I really liked the AL-MC, which are these tiny little lights with a magnetic charging case that you can slot in. What is nice about them is that they have all kinds of little effects. You can use them to do an explosion, dance party, fireworks, or even a fireplace effect.

Afidus – Timelapse Camera

The Afidus is a time-lapse camera that will run on 4 double AA batteries and it can run for 40 days while shooting on 1080p, but you can set the interval that you want. It compiles it into one video file and plays it like a time-lapse. It’s under $400, but it’s a quick and easy setup and you can check on it with your phone using wifi.

LiteMat Spectrum 4

The LiteMat Spectrum 4 is set to come out soon. I’m excited to see their RGB mats just because I really like LiteMat. Their lights are super easy to use and to set up. I really enjoy its functionality. The cool thing about them is that you can tune the whole light mat to show multiple colors and change whenever you want, so it’s not just one color at a time. They are a high-end light mat (4ft by 2ft) that sells for around $4500.

Blackwing 7 Lenses

Blackwing 7 is releasing some new lenses. This is a new company that was started by a well-known DP, Bradford Young, he shot some blockbuster movies like Arrival, Solo. He designed DNA lenses for ARRI when he shot Solo to customize this lens set to his liking. He took that idea and made his own company to customize your lenses for around $10,000/lens. This is a really novel idea and I’m really excited to see how this turns out.

Black Magic Releases

I got my hands on the Black Magic Ursa Mini Pro 2, which is a really great cinema camera. It great specs as I mentioned in a previous video and has RAW and ProRes CODECS. I’m excited for the battery grip for the BMPCC because the BMPCC has really poor battery life and it’s really hard to use while traveling and on the road. It’s a 2hr run time.

Tokina Vista 1 Lenses

Back to expensive lenses, the Tokina Vista Primes are some of the best lenses you can get for the price. They are full-frame coverage f1.5, great contrast and super sharp. They just announced their newest line called the Vista 1 Lenses just with a single coating with more flare. It’s pricey but in relative terms for a cinema lens. It’s around $5,000 for one, so you can put together a set for 20,000-30,000. I have Leica R lenses that have been cinemated for video and it cost me $7,000 to put together the set.

ARRI Alexa Mini LF

I saved the most expensive piece of equipment and best for last, the ARRI Alexa Mini LF. I’m so excited for the mini LF because it does everything that the original LF does for like 20k less. It only does 40 fps open gate, but it’s interesting to see a lot more affordable than the first Alexa’s.

Platypod’s First NAB

Platypod was also at NAB for the first time! They did their job really well and it’s super affordable for only $79.00
