(If you want to watch the video go here!)
Hey, it’s Jay P. here. I’m super excited because we got the Tamron 35-150mm Z mount lens. An f/2-2.8 on the Z8. Miranda’s going to be here with me. We’re going to take some pictures. I think you’re going to love this. I love this lens. I’ve used it on Sony. I think it’s a fabulous lens and an incredible camera. Let’s see what we get!
So I have shot on the 35-150mm for a long time. Tamron first introduced this lens on the Sony E mount. I’ve used it as a travel lens. I’ve used it as a video lens. It’s just an incredible lens because rarely do you ever find a telephoto that’s going to give you an f/2-2.8. You can get f/2 as fastest. Like for a lot of video people, they use a 24-105mm which is a little wider. But it doesn’t give you near the reach. This is a 35-150mm that gives you an f/2-2.8. So it’s going to start at f/2 at 35mm and go to f/2.8 by the time you get up to 150mm. So it’s going to give you nice bokeh, shallow depth of field. It’s going to give you a beautiful image on that high end telephoto range. And it’s going to give you a beautiful wide look on the lower end.
So I think this is really a great video lens. A lot of people are using this on a Sony mount because rarely do you find an f/2 or f/2.8 in a range that’s that wide. So you can use it on the FX6 and it just gives you a great video lens. This is a Z mount so now we’re on Nikon. Super excited to see them now make lenses for the Nikon Z mount. And this is a really good first introduction for them. Because this is a professional high-end lens. This is not a kit lens. This is a professional lens, incredibly sharp. I’ve used it over and over again, shot all through Iceland with it. Absolutely love the lens.
As I’m using it today on the Z8. The Z8 is a beautiful camera. The picture is absolutely gorgeous. Look at some of these images we shot up in a field before we came down to the beach. It’s just beautiful color. And I get a great rendition. The autofocus feature on the lens and the camera work really well together. I get fast autofocus and I’m getting that eye tracking. The Z8 has the same sensor as the Z9. So it’s a gorgeous picture. It’s really kind of in the same category as the a7R V. So that’s slightly down from the flagship camera. But it gives you a ton of features. So let’s keep shooting and let’s just look at some more images at that 35-150mm.
This has the same VXD Linear Motor Focus Mechanism that they have in the Sony version. Which is very quiet. It gives you quick autofocus. It tracks really well. It just gives you a beautiful autofocus system. So it works perfectly with the Z8 that has that 493 point autofocus system. It’s an AI based autofocus system that really it’s going to go to either human or animal or bicycle or car. You know it has the different options. So you can set it to be able to cover that entire sensor. It’s a beautiful autofocus system. They’re working really well together. I’m having no trouble tracking her eye. And getting in a little further it goes into a body on her head or a square on her head. And it’s working seamlessly. It really is nice. Take a look at more images.
So from 35-40mm you’re going to get f/2. From 40-60mm you’re going to get f/2.2. From 60-80mm you’re going to get f/2.5. And then you’re going to go to f/2.8 for the rest. The way I shoot this, I shoot aperture priority a lot. I’ll go to, with my 35mm I’ll set it on f/2. And then the camera is going to track. It’s going to as I close down, it’ll go to f/2, f/2.2, f/2.5, f/2.8. But then when I come back to 35mm it’ll go back to f/2. So I can keep it wide open if I want it that wide open. Sometimes I’ll just put it at f/2.8, which is really, a lot of, it’s very shallow depth of field. It works really nicely especially if you’re on 150 mm. That’s a lot. F/2.8 at 35mm though is a lot of depth of field. It looks really nice. So it just gives you a lot of options. I can go to f/2 at 35mm and I like that because it’s wider and that shallower depth of field looks really nice. So that’s how I use it to keep track of the changing aperture to give me the best of both those worlds as I’m shooting.
So I’m shooting with a Delkin 1 terabyte CF Express type B card. It’s an incredible card, superfast. It allows you to shoot as fast as you need to and buffer with that CF Express type B card. This camera will buffer up to a 1000 images, 50 seconds which is incredible. I mean you can just keep shooting raw images up to 1,000 raw images with 50 seconds worth of buffering. It really makes, because of that card, makes it so you can just keep on shooting. And you’re not being held back by the buffer, which is fabulous. And the autofocus on the lens keeps up with that burst and gives you those sharp images.
So the minimum focus distance is about 13 inches on 35mm. You have to get back further at 150mm. But it gives you about the same magnification. So it gets in fairly tight. It’s not a macro lens. But it gives you a nice close focus. Excellent for wedding kinds of things where you got to get in on flowers and things. It’s going to work really well for that.
So, just a couple of things about the Z8. The Z8 has got the same sensor that came out in the Z9. So it’s got a beautiful sensor. It’s got a lightweight design. It’s quite a bit lighter than the Z9 which super important. But it has incredible video specs. It has an 8.3k up to 60 frames a second in N-raw. You can also do a 4.1k up to 60 frames a second in pro-res. So this camera really has very robust video capabilities. Incredible camera that comes in right around the Z9 which is incredible. One thing to remember is this camera is only an electronic shutter like the Z9. So it does not have a mechanical shutter. But in that electronic shutter it gives you an incredible burst. You can go over a 1000 raw images in a burst up to 50 seconds. Which is really incredible. So it gives you great burst speed. It’s a smaller body which makes it easier for a lot of video applications. You’re not fighting it to put it in a cage like the Z9. It’s just, this really is more of a video crossover camera. Incredible camera.
So the video capabilities of Z8 are incredible which really makes this lens, the 35-150mm, even more valuable for this platform because it really is a great video lens. It gives you wide open aperture so you can get that shallow depth of field and it gives you the capabilities to give you a nice mid-range. So I think it’s a great companion to the Z8. And really for both stills and for video.
So Tamron’s 35-150mm has two focus lock buttons. So you can change between two points as you push those buttons. That’s really interesting if you want to set up something for farther way, closer or between two people or something, you have that option on the lens, which is awesome. It also has the port, the USB-c Port that allows you to plug in and to do all your updates with the lens, not using the camera. You can do it directly on the lens through Tamron’s app. Which gives you control of the of the lens. You can change the direction that it focuses. You can do all the different options to really customize the lens for your workflow and what you’re used to. So that’s been really useful, really helpful.
So who’s this lens for? I think this lens has several great uses. Number one is it’s a great video lens. It’s got a great mid-range zoom that gives you 35-150mm. I think it’s an incredible application that allows you to get the kind of depth of field, shallow depth of the field you want in video. And that’s what really makes it so workable. Also, it’s a great travel lens. You get beautiful landscapes with it. You can do great street photography with it. Even architectural kinds of work. It really is a lens that lends itself to a walk-around kind of street photography travel lens. So there’s some great applications. It’s a high-end professional lens that prosumers and amateurs alike are going to love. So there’s a look at the Tamron 35-150mm on the Z8. The Z8 is an amazing camera as well. The images, look at the images. You can see how beautiful they are. Absolutely stunning to look at. So, if you like this content and you want to hear more check out these things.
