Lens Rental Review- Bokeh Fire

January 28, 2016 By Morgan

Hi this is Jay P. Morgan. Today on The Slanted Lens I’m going to talk about a new service from Bokeh Fire. They’re a new sponsor here at The Slanted Lens. They’re basically Netflix for lenses. You simply sign up online, choose which monthly subscription you want. And then you choose the lens you want them to ship to you. They have Canon and Nikon lenses. I would guess that Sony will be coming soon, but I’m just guessing.

You use that lens for all month or part of the month. And if you say, ‘well, you know what I’d rather have a tilt-shift lens.’ You simply stick it back in the box, take the little prepaid label, stick it on the box and it ships right back to Bokeh Fire. Shipping to and from is included. So you can ship it back forth as many times as you want. You can get the lenses you need for the job you’re doing. Maybe on the weekend when you need an extra 24-70. Or you’re thinking, I’ve got this great little shot I want to do, I’d like to have a really long lens.

There are two different levels of rental on the Bokeh Fire website- basic and pro, with corresponding lenses. Great lenses in both category. You decide which one best fits your needs and what you’re going to be doing. You don’t have to be a pro to get pro lenses.

You can get online at BokehFire.com, set up your account, say I want this lens, they ship it out to you. When you’re done you put on your prepaid label and ship it back. You get back on the website and say, this is the one I want you to send me this time. Just like Netflix- back it comes. Very simple.

I think Bokeh Fire offers a great service because it does a couple of things- it allows you to try lenses out that you’re not sure about. In a month you could test out two or three different lenses to see which one you really like. It also gives you an extra lens. Say you’ve got another shooter coming on. You can rent a lens and be able to take care of that person. It also gives you the ability to say, I don’t really want to invest in this lens. But for the cost of this I’m gonna be able to trade it out. I can do several different lenses to keep a lens flow going for different things, without having to make that investment for each one of those different lenses.

This is my second lens this month. First I got a 24mm tilt shift, which was fabulous to play with and use. I sent that back and then I needed another 24-70 for what we’re shooting right now. We’ve got a lot of cameras going. We’ll send that back and then I want to try one of those long lenses. But it’s just a great service.

At first blush when I looked at this I thought, am I really going to use this? I like to buy the lenses. I like to have them. But the reality is, how many times do I really use my tilt shift lens? I’d be smarter to use Bokeh Fire and bring that lens in when I need it, then ship it back and use something else. I can always then get that extra lens when I need it. I can use a specialty lens when I want it, for doing some wildlife photography, or doing tilt shift. An extra wide lens for something I’m working on.

Bokeh Fire. Check ’em out, you’ll love ’em.
