Buying the Right Camera
I often have people ask me which camera on the market is best for a beginner- meaning that it is affordable and easy to use. Today on The Slanted Lens we are going to walk you through an analysis of 4 great options to choose from!
4 Great Cameras Under $750
The first tip I have for anyone who is going out and spending $700 on a camera is that you really should be buying this if you are serious about photography. If you are going to leave this camera set to autofocus, you would be better off buying a substantially cheaper point-and-shoot or using your smart phone. That being said, we are going to be comparing the Canon Rebel T7i, the Nikon D5600, the Sony Alpha a6300, and the Fujifilm X-E2S to give you an idea which one would work best for you.
Choosing Between a DSLR and a Mirrorless
Two of these cameras, the Canon and the Nikon, are DSLRs while the other two are mirrorless. The main difference between these two types of cameras is that when you use a DSLR you are not looking at the actual picture, but rather a reflection off of a mirror. With a mirrorless you are not using a mirror and are using an electronic view finder (EVF).
The biggest factor to consider when looking at which type of camera to buy is size. A DSLR is going to be much larger than a mirrorless- most people find that DSLRs can be a little too bulky and therefore like the mobility of a mirrorless camera. However, DSLRs do give you the added bonus of seeing exactly what the lens is picking up. This usually forces you to rely more heavily on your meters and your equipment. When you attempt to do this with an EVF, you may start to rely too heavily on your EVF instead of checking your meters to ensure you are getting a good shot.
So, if you love compact cameras, I would suggest buying a mirrorless. If, however, you are looking for a more responsive camera, I would suggest buying a DSLR. They are bulkier, but they really get the job done.
Deciding on a Lens Will Help You Decide on a Camera
Another factor to consider when buying a camera is the lens you want to buy. If you want to buy a Nikon lens, you probably want to buy a Nikon! If you have your eye on a specific lens, then buy the camera that will work best with it.
