Trends from the Trenches-April 2015

April 9, 2015 By Morgan

Jay P and Lars are in the calm before the NAB storm for April’s episode of Trends from the Trenches. That doesn’t mean there is a shortage of news items to discuss though! The guys talk about the new Phase One iXu 180 medium format camera for drones, the NEW new Alexa Mini from ARRI, Rolleiflex posting prototypes on eBay and the new Arkansas law about street photography. Do you have predictions for what will premiere and be revealed at NAB this year? Share in the comments below.

Ken talks about tripods in many shapes and sizes in segment two this month. Whether you shoot stills or video, check out What Ken Wants to Talk About, and get the low-down on the best style and size for your camera and needs.

Professor Frank returns to share the specs on Profoto’s new B2 strobe and the trend that strobe heads that are getting smaller and lighter. The B2 from Profoto is light enough to carry with one hand and has many applications in photography, and possibly video. Do you see a benefit to these smaller-sized heads, or are you sticking with larger heads?

The world of wireless follow-focus rigs has been an expensive one to get into in the past. In this month’s final segment, Lars shares about the new Lenszhound from Motiondogs – a much more affordable option that is the result of a kickstarter campaign. He has already used the device on set and loves it. Share your thoughts on this and other follow focus rigs in the world in the comments below.

Don’t forget to subscribe to the Trends from the Trenches podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. Listen to the show while you are on the go!
