Trends from the Trenches-March 2015

March 12, 2015 By Morgan

With WPPI just closing and many companies ramping up for NAB in April, there is a lot going on in the photo/video world and Jay P and Lars jump right in with this month’s all new episode of Trends from the Trenches.  In the first segment, the guys are question news of a camera with a 1000-year exposure and the FAA’s new guidelines for drones. Lars gushes over the new ARRI Alexa Mini; Jay P looks forward to Sony’s new lineup of fixed prime, full-frame lenses; and only time will tell if there is a market for the Yi Action Camera, China’s answer to the GoPro.

Professor Frank joins Jay P and Lars in the second segment to talk about the trend in strobe heads that are getting smaller and lighter. The B2 from Profoto is light enough to carry with one hand and has many applications in photography, and possibly video. Do you see a benefit to these smaller-sized heads, or are you sticking with larger heads?

Lars takes the lead in the third segment this month as he talks about the role and duties of a 1st AC (or camera assistant). Whether you are a seasoned vet in the camera department or are looking to get started, Lars has a few tips and tricks to help you to be a great 1st AC. What are some things you expect a 1st AC to know or do when you are working on set? Share in the comments below.

It can be hard to stay on top of new releases, tips and reviews so in the last segment, Jay P and Lars highlight some of their favorite websites and blogs for photography news. Share the sites you visit for the best news on cameras, techniques and other tricks.

Trends from the Trenches is now a podcast! Listen to Lars and Jay P’s news and reviews when you are on the go.
