Capture the Action: Useful Application of a Pistol Grip Camera Handle

The New Vanguard Alta Pro 2+ 263CGHT Carbon Fiber Kit

Vanguard has come out with a great bundle deal for people looking at creating an awesome tripod package for sports and action photography.

The pistol grip form factor gives you so much flexibility to frame your shots and get the images you want. The trigger system is fantastic to be able to keep your hand on the grip with one hand and using your other hand to auto-focus.

You get a lot of options to customize your grip head to your preferences. Loosening or tightening the tension for the roll or pitch. It also allows you to lock off the tripod to use for stationary shooting – also comes with both Nikon and Canon trigger cords!

Turning the pistol grip to any angle you want lets you work the way you want to work. This allows you to get into different angles if your shooting something high, low or straight on; a really great addition!

Using this setup worked really great for what we were doing today. And it would be a great tool to have in scenarios where you’re trying to follow fast-moving objects like surfers, horses, birds, cars, or runners! Great for sports and action photography!

Camera Settings

For this setup, we are going to shoot in manual and probably start off with a shutter speed of 1/2500. F/9 is the fastest we can shoot on this variable lens with a teleconverter, but since we’re in direct sunlight, that won’t be a problem.

Since we’re shooting at the beach, my camera will think the waves are pure white and will try to overcompensate for that and turn them gray. We don’t want that to happen. So I just need to keep an eye on my ISO and overexpose just slightly.

Ideally, we’d like to be at 800 ISO, but when there is cloud cover, we’ve been going as high as 1200 ISO.
