Today on The Slanted Lens we’re going to talk about work flow for travel and location photography! How are you going to keep everything backed up and managed when you’re on that long trip?
I’m heading out of the country to Uganda. I don’t want to carry a lot of things and weight, so I’m going to take a look at how I keep all my images safe to bring them back to the states with me.
Am I going to bring a laptop? NOOO! It’s too heavy and hard to take.
I’m going to take a new device called the GNARBOX!
I’ve been so excited about this because I’ve been wanting something like this for a long time. A device that lets me backup my cards, but also see what’s on the device. It has a small screen here which is great, but that’s not where I see what’s on it. I connect to an app on my phone through wifi and I can see the images stores as I back them up on the GNARBOX.
I’m bringing along an extra GNARBOX, Type G Power Plug Adapter, a cable, extra battery and my second GNARBOX. I’m also taking a case that has 12 cards in it and I will flip them over as I use them and the back when I’m done with it. If I don’t shoot past those 12 cards, I won’t erase anything. I back up to 2 places and if I have to, I’ll clear off the first cards used in order to keep shooting.
Make sure to carry them in 2 separate bags. I’ll put one in my luggage and one in my backpack. That way if one gets stolen, I still have one of the backups and my photos aren’t gone forever.
It’s a simple system to kinda have the capabilities of a computer, because once I get out there, I can look at images, I can sort images, all through the app on my phone.
Now let’s head to Uganda and get some pictures!!!
So we’ve been traveling here through Uganda for the last 10 days! We’ve been to Murchison Falls, on a safari, visited some villages, and now we’ve ended up at the source of the Nile! The point where lake Victoria start feeding into the Nile and that goes all the way through Egypt. So it’s just a very historic and incredible place. I’ve been backing up all my cards on the GNARBOX. It’s been a very simple. When I have it on, I just take my card out, now I’ll open it up, put my card in the end and then I have a couple options. I can simply hit “backup”, put it back in my bag and it’ll do the work. Or I can eject it.
The nice thing is, I can now look on my app, rename images, name folders, create new folders, choose selects, also I can do a lot of things to prep for video if I’m going to be doing video.
It’s just the perfect way to be able to manage your assets when you’re on location, so you don’t have to carry a computer.
I’ve got 2 of these, so that’s one this one has a number one on it for me. I could even now even back this one up to the other one. Or I can plug it into a drive and then I’ll be able to back it up through that. So it’s a great device to be able to take with you on location. When I’m done with this I’ll just take my card and put this back in my bag, and then I can go back to shooting again.
It’s treated me really well in Uganda, but the trips over. Time to get back to reality.
We’ve got back from our safari and I’ve got all my images backup on my on GNARBOX. I used about 850 GB. You simply have to go in, click on the GNARBOX and go to MASS STORAGE. When you turn that mass storage on, it turns your GNARBOX into a drive and you can simply backup all your stuff on your computer.
Once I have it as a drive on my computer, I can open the folders and see all my images. There’s my lion shots!
My images are all there, exactly how I organized them in the folders. Now I can take all of that in 1 sweeping motion and then drop it into my system.
You can even start to work in video on your GNARBOX system. It’s great that it’s not just for stills and can assist in video as well!
CONCLUSION
So there you have it! Next time you go on location or vacation for that matter, if you have a device like the GNARBOX it helps you keep things organized so you can see them and don’t have to haul that laptop along with you.
