2 BIG Sony Announcements! The New Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS & 200-600 f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Lenses

Sony has just announced 2 new lenses! The Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS lens and the FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS lens!

Today on The Slanted Lens we are going to take a look at these 2 new lenses;

These are 2 great lenses that Sony has needed in their E series.
That fast autofocus is what makes the 600mm one of the most important lenses I’ve seen in a long time. It has a new autofocusing mechanism in the 600mm that slides on a rail that makes it so much faster than anything I’ve ever seen.

PICTURE QUALITY TEST

Let’s test these lenses for picture quality!
We stood on the bridge in Jersey and shot the buildings across the bay.

600mm F4

This is extremely sharp and it’s sharp right to the corners.

When we put on a 1.4x converter we had a great image in the middle. There was a little bit of haze because of the distance and the day, but this image is really clean.

When you go to 2.0x converter you’re now at 1200mm, it’s drifting a little bit in the corners, but the sharpness overall is pretty clean.

200-600mm @ 200mm

The image is nice and crisp.

200-600mm @ 400mm

It brings everything right in. It’s very sharp.

200-600mm @ 600mm

You see a little bit of drift in the corners. This claims that you’ll keep up to 80% sharpness and I’m convinced that it’s that or better!

200-600mm @ 600mm w/ 1.4x converter

Now if you go to a converter, I see a bit more of loss in those corners.

200-600mm @ 600mm w/ 2.0x converter

This overall has incredible sharpness.

SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY TEST

These lenses are only about a couple of things, and it really is wildlife, birds or sports! So we headed over to Red Bull stadium to shoot soccer. We had Nick Didlick @nickdidlick with us who is a professional sports photographer. He gave me tips and walking me through what my camera settings should be.

Here are the settings he recommends.

I was going to single point large, cause I was having a hard time hitting the players.

So it gives you a shutter that’s going to stop the action and because it’s F4 it gives you beautiful shallow depth of field.

600mm F4

I got several frames of them completely with their legs up in the air. Even at 32 ISO it holds and looks really well.

200-600 F5.6-6.3

The background gets so busy on this that it just doesn’t really work.

On this net image here, you see that it’s a lot tighter and the background falls more out of focus.

BOKEH
Let’s take a look at the bokeh on these 2 lenses!

Both of these are 11 blade lenses, so the bokeh at 600 is really similar. There are some vertical lines in it, which could have been the glass at the end of the hall or it’s just a characteristic of the lens. This is shot at a very high ISO just to get enough light.

If you take the 600mm and go to F4, look how large that bokeh comes.

VIDEO TEST

600mm F4

As I walk towards the lens, the focus is staying with me. Sometimes it jumps and fall out. It’s strobing a little too much but pulls to a tight shot on my face at the end.

200-600mm F5.6-6.3

As I walk towards the camera it stays with me, there is a point where it falls in and out just a little bit. I like the look of the background as it falls out of focus. I walk right up into a pretty tight shot and the focus stays well.

ERGONOMICS TEST

Let’s see how these 2 lenses feel in your hand.

600mm F4

I am pretty impressed. it’s balanced in my hand and is super comfortable to use. This is one of the lightest large lenses out there!

200-600mm F5.6-6.3

Obviously, it’s a lot smaller and lighter in your hand. This feels like a lens you can walk around and handle it easily.

CONCLUSION

Who’s going to buy these lenses?!

600mm F4

Professional sports, birds, and wildlife photographers that will save up for a long time to be able to add this beauty to their collection to seriously level up their work.

200-600mm F5.6-6.3

Every armature out there who likes to shoot sports and wildlife and can scrape up a couple thousand dollars would buy this lens.

I think the market is going to respond extremely well to this. The Olympics are coming up and it seems Sony has had this planned for a while to deliver some great new lens options for all levels of photographers out there.
